Founded in Santa Monica in 1984 by guitarist Les Evans, drummer Scott Peterson, and bassist Adam Scott (later replaced by Rob Nicholson), Cryptic Slaughter emerged as early metalcore pioneers renowned for their breakneck speed within the West Coast hardcore scene. After the successes of "Convicted" (1986) and "Money Talks" (1987), "Stream of Consciousness" stands as the final album featuring the original lineup, as the band disbanded before its release. Displaying intricate tempo changes in each track, the album showcases the group's inventive peak before their regrouping led them towards a more pronounced metal direction. A landmark in the annals of crossover thrash history.
